"Beluga Stein is funnier than Hercule Poirot, sharper than Miss Marple, and
looks better in a tent-sized frock than Sherlock Holmes. Of course, she *does*
have some help from her wonderful cata talented, opinionated beastie who
makes a perfect familiar to this wonderful new detective. In short, this is a
great read. One part ghost story, one part mystery, and one part marvelous
writingwhich all adds up to a fast-paced, entertaining tale that will make
you wish there was more of Beluga to love." Cherie M. Priest, author of Four and
Twenty Blackbirds
"I loved this book and cannot wait for the next in the series! Beluga Stein is
the person we all wish we could be, totally unafraid to be herself and totally
unwilling to apologize for it. Her friends and the other characters in the book
are eccentric but believable, as is the fact that a cat can be a familiar and
ghosts can be real. The plot is completely engaging and the book such an easy
read that you find yourself wishing it would go on. Thank goodness there will
be more to come, based on the excerpt from the next book in the back. Certainly
Beluga Stein will achieve stature equal to the other beloved, eccentric
detectives such as Ms. Marple and Hercule Poirot." Steven R. Warstadt, reader

Beluga Stein wears loud muumuus, smokes
pastel cigarettes, and is a hit-or-miss psychic on perpetual sabbatical from a
small North Georgia college where she is a professor of biology. She never
travels without her familiar, a black cat named Planchette, who happens to be a
far more gifted psychic. An ill-conceived birthday gift from her best friend
Tanya lands Beluga and Planchette at the opening of a luxurious new resort and
spa in the North Georgia mountains, Pursuit of Health. Opposed to healthy
pursuits, nutritious meals, and fitness of any kind. Beluga is ready to leave
when a dead body surfaces in the mud baths. After witnessing an inept inquest, a
shady murder investigation and several supernatural manifestations, Beluga and
Planchette launch their own investigation. Beluga, Planchette, and Tanya will do
everything in their power to unveil the conspiracy behind the mud bath death.
Even if it means calling up the supernatural. That plan may be, after all, their
Last Resort.
